Indiaspora | Give Partnership
Indiaspora’s philanthropy work has taken the form of a long-term partnership with Give, a philanthropic giving platform in India. The partnership is Give’s first entity in the US, and aims to amplify philanthropic giving from institutions, foundations, and high-net-worth individuals from the United States to social impact initiatives in India.
“We are delighted to join hands with Give, given the significant and complementary strengths of both organizations,” said Indiaspora’s Founder and Chairman of the Board MR Rangaswami. “Leveraging Indiaspora’s network of prominent Indian diaspora leaders and Give’s network of on-the-ground nonprofit partners, we look forward to accelerating global philanthropic giving to India.”
Give, in the U.S., will aim to support over 500 nonprofits in India through philanthropic contributions from more than 200 partners. Ashish Shah, formerly Senior Director of Philanthropy and Community Engagement at Indiaspora, will lead the new venture as CEO of North America.
In the inaugural year of our partnership, Give and Indiaspora are jointly hosted the Indiaspora-Give Philanthropy Summit on October, 2022 at the Consulate General of India, New York.
The philanthropy summit brought together leading philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofits to share insights about recent shifts and opportunities in philanthropy to India, understand pressing social issues in the United States, and explore how we can collectively work towards solutions.
ChaloGive
Indiaspora launched its ChaloGive campaign to encourage and facilitate giving by the Indian diaspora. The ChaloGive campaign is an effort to address the obstacles identified above and aims to make online giving simple and strategic. This is similar to Giving Tuesday in the US or Daan Utsav in India, but is focused on individual giving by the Indian diaspora to organizations in India and the US. The goal of the campaign is to engage this important demographic of potential micro donors, and create a new culture of giving by the diaspora.
In the past, we partnered with several donors to raise over $10 million collectively for COVID relief in India in 2021, on top of our own $3.5 million raised. In 2020, ChaloGive provided over 8 million meals to people in the U.S. and India.
Founding the India Philanthropy Alliance
On the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, eleven organizations announced the formation of a new India Philanthropy Alliance (IPA) to further advance humanitarian and development goals in India through increased collaboration. They did so at the Indiaspora Philanthropy Summit held on the first day of ChaloGive, a week celebrating Indian diaspora philanthropy.
Today the number of organizations has increased from eleven to sixteen:
Agastya USA, Akanksha Education Fund, Akshaya Patra Foundation USA, American India Foundation (AIF), Antara International, Arogya World, Children’s Hope India, CRY America, Foundation for Excellence (FFE), Indiaspora, Pratham USA, Project ECHO, Sehgal Foundation, Teach for India U.S., VisionSpring and WISH Foundation.
These organizations collectively raise more than $135 million annually in philanthropic donations, including more than $60 million in the United States to support their evidenced-based development and humanitarian programs. Their most generous donors are Indian-American entrepreneurs and professionals as well as companies doing business in both the United States and India. Together, these 16 organizations have cumulatively impacted more than 70 million people with their programs spanning education, health care, livelihood support, and other essential services.
